Cardiff-Newport railway to fully reopen after major lineside fire

Normal train services are set to resume between Cardiff and Newport following extensive repairs to a railway line damaged by a lineside fire. The fire, which began outside the railway boundary on August 1, caused significant damage to signalling systems and overhead line equipment used to power electric trains.

Network Rail engineers worked 24 hours a day for a week to complete the recovery. The repair work included replacing 11 kilometers of cable and 300 meters of cable troughing, alongside damaged telecoms and power equipment. While relief lines were opened shortly after the incident to allow limited movement, the fire caused major disruption to both passenger and freight services on this busy South Wales route.

The British Transport Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are investigating the cause of the fire. Full service is expected to return by Saturday, August 8.
