Cardinal Advincula defines true wealth during St. Francis anniversary
During a Mass at the University of Santo Tomas marking the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula urged Catholics to redefine their understanding of wealth.
Advincula stated that true wealth is not found in status, possessions, or achievements, but in “a heart free enough to give, humble enough to serve, and empty enough to receive God.” He cautioned against a culture of consumerism that encourages individuals to measure their worth through influence and material goods.
Reflecting on the life of St. Francis, the Cardinal noted that while Francis was born into privilege, he chose a life of poverty and solidarity with the marginalized. Advincula emphasized that Franciscan poverty is characterized by freedom from the attachments and the desire to control circumstances, rather than just a lack of material items.
