Pope Leo XIV appoints new members to Vatican Council for the Economy

Pope Leo XIV has appointed eight new members to the Vatican Council for the Economy, the body responsible for overseeing the administrative and financial structures of the Holy See and the Roman Curia. The appointments include four cardinals: Grzegorz Ryś (Archbishop of Krakow), Ladislav Nemet (Archbishop of Belgrade), Jean-Paul Vesco (Archbishop of Algiers), and Roberto Repole (Archbishop of Turin).

In a move noted for increasing professional and gender diversity, the Pope also appointed four laypeople. These include Gisela Bergmann, Princess of Liechtenstein and CEO of Industrie-Und Finanzkontor, and Elena Principato-Wettstein, an executive at UBS. Other lay appointees include Denis Duverne, chair of the board of the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale, and Paolo Nusiner, a director within the Dicastery for Communication.

The Council, established in 2014, serves to ensure transparency and accountability in the Holy See’s financial management. Existing leadership remains in place, with Cardinal Reinhard Marx continuing as coordinator and Professor Charlotte Kreuter-Kirchhof serving as vice-coordinator.
