Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle honors father with plea for peace

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle delivered a homily calling for an end to war and violence during the funeral Mass for his father, Manuel “Tatay Maning” Tagle Sr., at Imus Cathedral in Cavite.

During the service, the Cardinal reflected on his father’s experiences as a survivor of World War II air raids, noting that the physical and mental scars of conflict affect families and communities for generations. Tagle emphasized the importance of human relationships and service, citing his father’s history of helping the sick and supporting students.

Manuel Tagle Sr. passed away on September 6 at the age of 96, shortly after celebrating his 70th wedding anniversary. Pope Leo XIV issued a message of condolence to the Cardinal and his family, offering spiritual closeness and apostolic blessings. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to support victims of flash floods in Nepal.
