Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle elected dean of the College of Cardinals

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, a 69-year-old Filipino prelate, has been elected as the new dean of the College of Cardinals. The election, approved by Pope Leo XIV, makes Tagle the first Asian cardinal to hold this prestigious position. He succeeds 92-year-old Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who is stepping down after serving as dean since January 2020 and will now hold the title of dean emeritus.

As dean, Tagle will assume the title of the suburbicarian church of Ostia while retaining his current title of Albano. He will also continue his role as pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization. The dean’s primary responsibilities include coordinating the activities of the College of Cardinals and presiding over a papal conclave in the event of a vacancy of the Holy See, provided the dean is under the age of 80.

The position follows a 2019 reform by Pope Francis, which transitioned the deanship from a lifetime appointment to a five-year term that is renewable once.
