Cardinal Odilo Scherer visits Vatican and issues voter guidance
Cardinal Odilo Scherer, the Archbishop of São Paulo, recently participated in a pilgrimage to Rome with a delegation from the Brazilian television network Rede Vida. During a visit to the Vatican News studios, Scherer discussed the importance of reliable communication in an era of digital misinformation and polarized discourse. He emphasized that religious communicators are called to transmit the truth of the Gospel, acting as “beacons of reliability” through rigorous fact-checking.
In a separate context regarding civic engagement, Cardinal Scherer has also provided guidance to voters. He advised citizens to avoid candidates who advocate for increased armament, the liberalization of weapons, or excessive punitive measures. Scherer warned that proposals for unlimited repression could lead to a “system of state terror,” suggesting instead that education, respect, and social solidarity should be prioritized as alternatives to violence.
