Cardinal Parolin calls for United Nations reform

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, has called for the continual reform of the United Nations to address a growing crisis in multilateralism. Following his attendance at the UN General Assembly in New York, Parolin emphasized that the current global instability and ongoing conflicts, specifically in Ukraine and the Middle East, are exacerbated by a loss of mutual trust between nations.

Parolin noted that while the UN is intended to provide a platform for all countries, many nations are currently prioritizing their own interests over compromise or openness to others. This shift has led to widespread pessimism and has hindered effective responses to humanitarian emergencies. He advocated for a return to fundamental human values and a renewed commitment to international law and security as the necessary conditions for achieving lasting peace.
