Cardinal Pietro Parolin visits Guatemala, meets President Arévalo
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin arrived in Guatemala in early August 2026 to mark the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Guatemala and the 400th anniversary of Fray Pedro. He celebrated a solemn Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral attended by President Bernardo Arévalo, Vice President Karin Herrera, ministers and hundreds of faithful.
Parolin is scheduled to meet President Arévalo on Monday and to hold a further discussion with Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez. Guatemalan officials said the visit will deepen bilateral dialogue and cooperation on issues such as peace, justice, human dignity, anti‑corruption, organized crime, migration, environmental protection and human‑rights defence. The president previously visited the Vatican in October 2025 for a private audience with Pope Leo XIV, reaffirming Guatemala’s invitation to the Pope for a future apostolic trip.
