Cardinal Reinhard Marx marks 30 years as bishop
Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, expressed optimism regarding the future of the Catholic Church during a conference marking the 30th anniversary of his ordination as a bishop.
Reflecting on the institution's recent challenges, Marx acknowledged that the Church had reached a “low point,” particularly following the abuse scandals that prompted him to offer his resignation to Pope Francis in 2021. Despite these difficulties, he stated his conviction that “it goes on” and emphasized his desire to maintain a Church that includes both conservatives and progressives.
Marx, who has served as a prominent figure in the German Catholic Church and participated in two papal conclaves, noted that the current reform efforts, including the Synodal Path, stem from the necessity of addressing these scandals. He stated that he does not regret his role in these processes.
