Cardinal Woelki warns of dire situation for Christians in West Bank

Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki of Cologne has described the situation for Christian communities in the West Bank as ‘shattering’ following a solidarity trip to the Holy Land. During visits to locations including Nablus, Aboud, Ein Arik, and Taibeh, the Cardinal noted a profound sense of hopelessness among local Christians.

Woelki reported that many residents, particularly educated young people, feel they have no future in the region due to a lack of employment opportunities and the ongoing political situation. He highlighted the ‘aggressive occupation by Israeli settlers’ as a primary source of fear, citing instances of clashes and the destruction of livelihoods.

One specific account shared by the Cardinal involved a local cement company and quarry that was occupied by settlers, resulting in the destruction of machinery and infrastructure. This incident left the owner facing total loss and caused 40 families to lose their means of support. Woelki observed that the increasing presence of Israeli flags in the West Bank conveys a message that local residents have no right to live there, contributing to widespread insecurity among the Christian population.
