Maradona death trial: Experts testify to sudden cardiac event

Expert testimonies in the trial regarding the death of Diego Maradona have introduced conflicting medical perspectives. Defense experts, including cardiologist Ricardo Iglesias and forensic physician Antonio Maya, testified that the footballer suffered a sudden, unpredictable cardiac event. Iglesias stated that Maradona’s heart was “absolutely normal” and lacked detectable pathologies in 2020, contradicting previous medical boards that suggested a history of dilated cardiomyopathy and a prolonged period of agony.

Antonio Maya argued that the death was “unpredictable” and suggested that Maradona bore responsibility for the outcome because he frequently refused medical examinations, exercising his right to autonomy. This testimony directly challenges the prosecution's claim that medical professionals acted with negligence by ignoring warning signs. The trial continues to examine whether the medical team, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, failed to provide adequate care during Maradona’s home hospitalization.
