Cardiologist warns of cardiovascular risks during menopause

Cardiologist Diego Araiza is highlighting the significant cardiovascular risks associated with menopause, noting that the drastic decline in estrogen levels can leave women unprotected. He describes estrogen as acting like ‘bodyguards’ for the arteries, and warns that without them, the risk of suffering a heart attack can equal that of men.

During the menopausal transition, several physiological changes can occur silently, including increased LDL cholesterol, higher blood pressure, increased abdominal fat, and metabolic alterations. The American Heart Association identifies this period as a critical window for detecting and managing these cardiovascular risk factors.

While lifestyle changes like diet and exercise remain important, Araiza emphasizes that modern cardiology offers advanced medical strategies to intervene early and protect heart health based on individual risk profiles.
