Cardiologists offer dietary tips for managing cholesterol and heart health
Cardiologists suggest several lifestyle and dietary adjustments to manage high LDL cholesterol and support cardiovascular health. Dr. Leslie Cho of the Cleveland Clinic emphasizes that while genetics may necessitate medication, certain dietary changes can make a significant difference.
Key recommendations include replacing saturated fats—found in butter, fatty meats, and certain oils—with unsaturated fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, and fish. Increasing intake of soluble fiber through oats, barley, legumes, fruits, and vegetables is also advised to help remove cholesterol from the digestive system. Dr. Cho specifically suggests adding ground flaxseed to meals for its fiber and fatty acid content.
Additionally, cardiologists highlight the benefits of specific fruits for heart health. Dr. Joy Gelbman notes that apples, bananas, and berries are excellent snack choices. Apples provide polyphenols and antioxidants, bananas offer potassium and magnesium, and berries are rich in fiber and antioxidants, which can assist in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
