Cardiologists warn of heart risks from using alcohol to manage stress

Cardiologists are warning that using alcohol to cope with stress can lead to significant long-term heart health issues. Dr. Heather Shenkman notes that reaching for alcohol during stressful periods can be particularly harmful, as increased consumption is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Alcohol can elevate blood pressure even without excessive consumption, placing additional strain on the heart and blood vessels. For individuals already suffering from hypertension, even small amounts of alcohol can worsen the condition.

Furthermore, consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short period can trigger irregular heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation. Dr. Adedapo Iluyomade refers to this phenomenon as ‘holiday heart syndrome,’ which can affect individuals even if they have no prior history of heart problems. This condition is associated with symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, and an increased risk of stroke and heart failure. Over the long term, excessive drinking can also weaken the heart muscle.
