Cardiovascular disease prevention and dietary health insights
Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of death globally and in Italy, where they account for approximately 30% of all recorded deaths. In response, the SS. Cosma e Damiano Hospital in Pescia is participating in the (H) Open Week for cardiovascular diseases, promoted by the Fondazione Onda, to focus on early diagnosis and awareness.
The hospital has scheduled specific sessions on September 29 and October 1. The first session offers cardiology visits, ECGs, and echocardiograms specifically for individuals with a family history of sudden cardiac death. The second session provides check-ups and information sessions regarding cardiomyopathy and general cardiovascular risks.
Regarding dietary prevention, Dr. James Stone, a cardiologist at the South Heart Clinic in Texas, advises avoiding starch-rich refined foods. He notes that refined grains, such as white rice and white bread, lack the nutrients found in whole grains, including antioxidants and fiber, because the manufacturing process removes essential components. Consuming these refined carbohydrates can lead to rapid digestion and spikes in blood glucose levels.
