Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death in Ecuador and Chile
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death globally, accounting for approximately 20 million deaths annually. In Ecuador, ischemic heart diseases were the primary cause of death in 2024, with 14,471 recorded fatalities according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC).
Medical experts emphasize that cardiovascular health requires attention from childhood and adolescence, as lifestyle habits formed early influence future health. Risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, sedentary lifestyles, and smoking accumulate over time. Warning signs include chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and unusual sweating.
In Chile, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among women, surpassing gynecological cancers. Experts note a significant risk increase following menopause, as the protective effect of estrogen on cholesterol levels and arterial elasticity diminishes. This biological shift often leads to a sudden rise in lipids, increasing the risk of vascular events. Despite the high mortality rate, many women delay medical evaluations due to a low perception of personal risk.
