World Heart Day: Global campaigns focus on cardiovascular disease prevention

World Heart Day is observed annually on September 29 to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases, which remain the leading cause of death globally. The 2026 campaign, organized by the World Heart Federation and the World Health Organization, uses the slogan ‘Don’t Miss a Beat’ to emphasize the importance of recognizing silent symptoms and early detection.

Health authorities and medical professionals worldwide are highlighting the critical need for prevention. In Colombia, heart disease is the primary cause of mortality, while in Eswatini, 21.7 percent of adults live with high blood pressure. In Paraguay, approximately 50 percent of the adult population is hypertensive. In Argentina, one third of adults are hypertensive, and experts warn that nearly half of these cases are asymptomatic.

Medical institutions are conducting various awareness activities, including medical screenings, educational workshops, and community walks. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, projects have focused on women's heart health, noting that women are 14 times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than from breast cancer. Technological advancements, such as AI in clinical decision-making and wearable devices like the Samsung Galaxy Watch, are also being discussed as tools to assist in monitoring heart health and managing risk factors like sleep, activity, and blood pressure.
