Cardiovascular diseases cause approximately 30% of deaths in Argentina and Chile
On World Heart Day, medical specialists in Argentina and Chile highlighted the significant impact of cardiovascular diseases, noting they remain a leading cause of death in both nations.
In Argentina, circulatory system diseases caused 105,130 deaths in 2024, representing 30.3% of all defined deaths. This included 26,404 deaths from heart failure and 22,841 from ischemic heart disease. Experts from Hospital Británico recommend five key habits to reduce risk: increasing physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly), improving diet by prioritizing whole foods and reducing sodium and sugar, ensuring 7 to 9 hours of sleep, managing stress, and avoiding smoking.
In Chile, data from the Department of Statistics and Health Information (DEIS) recorded over 30,000 deaths from circulatory system diseases in 2024. Cardiologists note that approximately 30% of deaths in the country are attributable to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events. Specialists emphasize that while some risk factors are non-modifiable, many are preventable through controlling obesity, sedentary lifestyles, blood pressure, and diabetes.
