Cardiovascular health experts highlight key risk factors and cholesterol targets
Medical experts in Germany are highlighting critical factors for cardiovascular health and refining risk assessment standards. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Germany, claiming approximately 340,000 lives annually. Key preventable risk factors include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and obesity.
To combat these risks, health organizations such as the Deutsche Herzstiftung, the Bundesverband Niedergelassener Kardiologen (BNK), and the ABDA are emphasizing the importance of regular medical screenings for blood pressure, lipids, and glucose levels. Experts warn that conditions like hypertension and high LDL cholesterol are ‘silent vessel killers’ that can damage the heart and vessels for years without symptoms.
Recent medical discussions have also focused on more precise cholesterol management. Experts suggest that looking at LDL cholesterol alone is insufficient; instead, triglycerides and specific LDL subtypes—particularly small, dense LDL particles (sdLDL) which are highly atherogenic—must be considered. For patients with diabetes, target LDL levels are more stringent, dropping to below 100 mg/dl, and potentially as low as 70 mg/dl for those who have lived with the disease for over ten years.
