Cardiovascular health: Managing silent risks like aneurysms and arterial plaque

Medical experts are highlighting the dangers of silent cardiovascular conditions, specifically aortic aneurysms and the mechanisms behind sudden heart attacks and strokes.

Aortic aneurysms often present no symptoms until they rupture, leading to fatal internal bleeding. Risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, and arteriosclerosis. Advances in imaging, such as CT and ultrasound, allow for earlier detection. Minimally invasive treatments like stent-grafting are increasingly available for elderly patients.

Furthermore, the progression of arteriosclerosis can lead to life-threatening events through a biological ‘misunderstanding.’ When cholesterol plaques within the arteries rupture, the body’s defense system mistakenly triggers blood clotting—similar to how a scab forms on skin. In the bloodstream, these clots can block vessels, causing myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend managing blood pressure, reducing salt intake, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and maintaining hydration.
