Cardiovascular health risks: Hypertension and cholesterol warnings
Medical experts are highlighting the risks associated with silent cardiovascular conditions, specifically hypertension and high cholesterol. Research indicates that for over half of patients with normal blood pressure readings in clinical settings, morning blood pressure levels remain outside the target range, potentially overlooking nocturnal risks.
Regarding cholesterol, clinicians warn that high levels can affect individuals regardless of weight. Familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder, is a significant concern; it is estimated that only 2 to 10 percent of affected individuals receive a formal diagnosis. This condition can reduce life expectancy by 15 to 21 years if left untreated.
Furthermore, peripheral artery disease (PAD) can manifest as leg pain or cramps after short distances. In the UK, the University of Leicester reports that PAD affects approximately 20 percent of people over age 60. Experts emphasize that being symptom-free while on medication does not indicate a cure, and patients are strongly cautioned against discontinuing blood pressure or cholesterol treatments without medical supervision, as doing so can lead to rapid increases in risk for heart attack and stroke.
