Cardiovascular health: Risks of palpitations and intense heat training

Medical experts are highlighting various factors that can impact heart rhythm and cardiovascular safety during physical activity. Heart palpitations, such as the sensation of a skipped beat or a sudden heavy thud, are not always indicative of underlying disease. Common triggers include stress, anxiety, caffeine, alcohol, dehydration, and hormonal changes.

Cardiologists are specifically warning against high-intensity training in extreme conditions, such as hot yoga. The combination of intense exertion and high temperatures or humidity can force the cardiovascular system to work harder while simultaneously causing fluid loss and lowered blood pressure. This poses significant risks for individuals with heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, or uncontrolled hypertension. Experts recommend that those with pre-existing cardiac conditions or asthma consult a physician before engaging in heat-based exercise routines.
