Cardiovascular risks highlighted by deaths of amateur runners in Brazil
Recent deaths of amateur runners in Brazil have highlighted the cardiovascular risks associated with high-intensity physical exercise. In Feira de Santana, Bahia, a 49-year-old public servant died during a street race, suspected to be a sudden cardiac event. Similarly, two men aged 46 and 50 recently passed away during or immediately after running in São Paulo.
Medical experts advise that while sudden death during exercise is rare, certain risk factors increase the likelihood of collapse. Cardiologist Luís Henrique Borges Ribeiro noted that severe arrhythmias or heart attacks can prevent blood flow to vital organs, leading to circulatory collapse and cardiac arrest.
Individuals planning to engage in high-intensity activities such as running or cycling should undergo cardiovascular evaluations, especially if they have pre-existing conditions like hypertension, diabetes, smoking habits, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. For those with diabetes, managing nutrition before exercise is also critical.
