Cardón refinery in Venezuela shuts down after gas line fire

A fire caused by a natural gas line rupture forced a total shutdown of Venezuela’s Cardón refinery on Tuesday, October 6. The incident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. at the facility, which is part of the Paraguaná Refining Center in Falcón state.

State-run oil company PDVSA reported that the fire was quickly contained by emergency response personnel. According to the company, there were no injuries to workers, no damage to third parties, and no major material losses. As a precaution, the refinery’s plants and boilers were placed under an emergency shutdown while officials evaluate the conditions necessary for a safe restart.

The Cardón refinery has a capacity of approximately 310,000 barrels per day and is the second-largest in the country. It is a critical component of the Paraguaná Refining Center, which has a total capacity of 955,000 barrels per day. While the shutdown affects a major processing unit, PDVSA stated that the national refining system maintains sufficient fuel inventories to ensure continued supply to the Venezuelan population.
