Care benefits and retroactive payments for Pflegegrad 2

Individuals assigned a care level of 2 (Pflegegrad 2) in Germany are entitled to various benefits from the long-term care insurance (Pflegekasse). While household assistance is not explicitly listed as a standalone benefit, costs can be partially covered through the monthly relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag), which currently stands at 131 euros.

Other available benefits for level 2 include care allowance (Pflegegeld), in-kind benefits (Pflegesachleistungen), and subsidies for day/night care, short-term care, respite care, and home modifications.

Regarding the timing of payments, care allowance can be paid retroactively to cover the processing period. According to § 33 SGB XI, the start of benefits depends on whether the need for care began in the same month as the application or a previous month. If the need for care began in a prior month, benefits are generally granted from the first day of the month following the onset of care, rather than just the application date, to ensure insured individuals are not financially disadvantaged by administrative delays.
