Care home deputy manager defrauds elderly resident of nearly €1 million

Rebecca Louise Burwood, a deputy manager at a care home in Mold, North Wales, defrauded a 99-year-old resident of approximately €900,000 between 2017 and 2023. The victim, who had no living relatives and relied on Burwood for social interaction, was coerced into transferring a house worth roughly €475,000 to Burwood and allowing the withdrawal of an additional €440,000 from her accounts.

Burwood obtained a lasting power of attorney for the resident without informing the care home. Investigators found that Burwood used the funds for luxury purchases, including a car, a motorhome, and extensive home renovations. She also spent a portion of the money on cosmetic surgeries and withdrew £160,000 in cash from ATMs. The fraud was discovered in March 2023 when a bank flagged unusually high withdrawal amounts from the senior's account.
