Care Quality Commission issues varying ratings for UK care homes

Recent inspections by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) have yielded contrasting results for care facilities in the United Kingdom.

Montague House in Brampton, Huntingdonshire, has been upgraded to a ‘Good’ rating. Following a previous inspection in March 2023 that found regulatory breaches regarding safe care and governance, the facility has since made sufficient improvements. The home received an ‘Outstanding’ rating for its caring practices, with inspectors noting that staff provided compassionate, person-centred care, particularly for residents living with dementia.

In contrast, Kite Hill Care Home, operated by Colville Care Limited, has been issued three formal warning notices after being rated as ‘requires improvement’. An inspection in July uncovered five regulatory breaches involving consent, safe care and treatment, and governance. Specific failings included missing mental capacity assessments, poor management of medical risks, and compromised medicines management, such as the administration of expired medication. While the facility was praised for high hygiene standards, relatives expressed concerns regarding care consistency and resident isolation.
