Care tips for Poinsettias and Christmas cacti

Maintaining seasonal plants like the Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) and the Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) requires specific attention to environmental conditions and drainage.

For Poinsettias, the colorful parts are actually modified leaves called bracts, rather than petals. To ensure longevity, it is recommended to select plants with uniform color and central yellow flowers (cyathia) that are still mostly closed. These plants are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and should be protected from temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius during transport.

When selecting a Christmas cactus, buyers should look beyond the blooms and inspect the pot. Because these plants originate from humid Brazilian forests, they require well-draining soil and pots with drainage holes to prevent root rot. Ensuring the substrate allows water to flow through is essential for the plant's long-term health.
