Career Pulse study shows fairness perception drives employee career growth

A recent roundtable discussion, built on the Career Pulse research by the Career Innovation Company, analysed responses from more than 24,000 participants. The study identified five key conditions that support career advancement: visible opportunities, career support, capable managers, stretch assignments, and, most importantly, employee confidence that the system is fair.

The research highlighted a gap between formal fairness—consistent processes, transparent criteria—and employees' sense of fairness, which hinges on whether they believe opportunities are genuinely attainable. Organizations are urged to move beyond procedural fairness and create an environment where career paths feel accessible, through manager‑career conversations, skill‑building programs, lateral moves, and active sharing of career stories.
