Caregiver support and recognition initiatives in the Netherlands

Local initiatives in the Netherlands are providing support and recognition for informal caregivers (mantelzorgers).

MVT Rheden and Rozendaal are organizing a 'Mantelzorgcafé' on September 21, 2026, in De Steeg. The event aims to educate caregivers about the Long-Term Care Act (Wet Langdurige Zorg or WLZ), which provides intensive care for those with severe, permanent needs such as dementia or significant physical limitations. An expert from Stichting MEE will be present to provide information and answer questions regarding navigating the complex healthcare landscape.

In the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, the local government is offering the 2026 caregiver appreciation award (mantelzorgwaardering). This is an annual reimbursement of up to €150 for residents receiving at least eight hours of non-routine care per week for more than three consecutive months, or those receiving terminal care. The recipient of the care must apply for the award, though caregivers can assist in the process.
