Caregiver syndrome impacts mental health of dementia caregivers
Caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia face significant physical and emotional risks known as caregiver syndrome. This condition arises when individuals provide intense, long-term care without sufficient resources to rest or attend to their own needs. Symptoms often manifest progressively and include permanent fatigue, irritability, insomnia, anxiety, sadness, and social isolation.
Data from the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona highlights a significant gender disparity in these responsibilities, noting that 67.2% of caregivers are women. Specifically, daughters assume the role in 27.6% of cases, compared to 9.1% for sons. Experts warn that caregivers often normalize exhaustion by prioritizing the needs of their relatives, making it crucial to recognize early signs of burnout and seek support before reaching a state of total overwhelm.
