Caregivers in France receive new support and labor rights

In France, initiatives are increasing to support caregivers—individuals who provide regular, non-professional assistance to relatives with disabilities, illnesses, or loss of autonomy. Data from DREES indicates there are approximately 9.3 million caregivers in the country, including 8.8 million adults and 500,000 minors. Roughly 58% of these caregivers are women, with an average age of 53.

At La Poste, the union FO Com has negotiated a second agreement to improve work-life balance for employees in caregiver roles. The agreement includes measures such as flexible work organization, three days of special leave per year for caregiver-related procedures, telecommuting options, easier access to part-time work, and a solidarity fund supported by donated rest days. The union emphasizes that caregiving responsibilities should not hinder professional advancement or promotions.

Additionally, the Hautes-Pyrénées department is hosting the 2026 departmental caregiver days. This event aims to provide information, exchange opportunities, and respite solutions for those supporting loved ones through daily tasks, administrative help, or personal care.
