Caregiving benefits in Germany and childcare costs in Switzerland

In Germany, updated regulations for respite care (Verhinderungspflege) and short-term care remain in effect for 2026. A combined annual budget of up to 3,539 euros is available for these services. The previous six-month waiting period has been abolished, allowing those with a care level of 2 or higher to claim benefits immediately. During substitute care, half of the previously received care allowance (Pflegegeld) continues to be paid for up to eight weeks per calendar year.

In Switzerland, a debate is intensifying regarding the costs of childcare. A recent study indicates that nearly half of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are willing to provide financial support for their employees' childcare to combat labor shortages and reduce absenteeism. Community surveys show significant financial pressure on families, with 16 percent of parents paying over 2,000 francs monthly for daycare, while 21 percent of households forgo daycare entirely to manage costs.
