Cargo bikes emerge as viable car alternative for families

A study published in the journal Transportation Research by researchers from the Technical University of Berlin indicates that cargo bikes are increasingly serving as a viable alternative to cars for daily trips. Based on a survey of approximately 2,400 users of shared or self-service cargo bikes in Germany, the research suggests that between 7.4% and 18.1% of active users reduced the number of vehicles in their household. The study notes that the primary impact comes from individuals choosing not to purchase a new car rather than those selling existing ones.

In the consumer market, new models are attempting to address the high cost of cargo bikes, which often range from 3,000 to 4,000 euros. The Fiido T2, priced at approximately 1,499 euros, is positioned as a more affordable option capable of transporting children and groceries. While offering a competitive price-to-equipment ratio and a generous battery, user testing noted some drawbacks, including a noisy motor, a soft front fork, and transmission issues.
