Cargo ship UHL Freedom rescued after engine failure near Schiermonnikoog

The cargo ship UHL Freedom, flying the Portuguese flag, was rescued on Sunday after losing power and drifting aimlessly in the North Sea north of Schiermonnikoog. The vessel, which transports wind turbine components, initially attempted to anchor in heavy storm conditions with wind force 9. However, the anchor failed to hold, and when the crew attempted to hoist it, multiple engines failed, leaving the ship without propulsion.

The vessel was tossed violently by high waves, causing injuries to three crew members. Emergency services, including KNRM rescue boats from Ameland, Schiermonnikoog, and Eemshaven, as well as German sea rescue services, a Coast Guard helicopter, and the emergency tug Guardian, coordinated a large-scale rescue operation.

Two of the injured crew members were airlifted by Coast Guard helicopter to a hospital in Groningen. While the ship has resumed slow movement approximately 30 kilometers north of Ameland, its long-term plans remain subject to the shipping company's decision. No cargo was reported lost during the incident.
