Cargo theft in Costa Rica causes millions in annual losses

Costa Rica is facing a significant economic and security crisis due to escalating container theft within its heavy transport networks. Organized criminal groups have reportedly stolen at least 156 truck shipments in 2025, making the country a regional leader in this type of crime. The financial impact on logistics operators is estimated at nearly $4 million annually.

Beyond the loss of high-value goods, such as electronics, clothing, and liquor, law enforcement authorities warn that criminal organizations are exploiting freight infrastructure to transport weapons and narcotics to international markets. The insecurity has disrupted regional supply chains, with transit times between Panama and Guatemala increasing as drivers avoid traveling at night to mitigate risks.

To combat these threats, private security costs for containers have risen by up to 25 percent. Industry leaders recently met at the Freight Logistics Chain Congress to address systemic vulnerabilities and the legal challenges surrounding cargo security and contractual liabilities in national trade corridors.
