Cargo theft incident on Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway

A vehicle carrying suspected armed individuals crashed on the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway after an attempted hijacking of a tractor-trailer. The suspects reportedly fired multiple shots to stop the truck before their Volkswagen SUV veered off the road and struck a barbed-wire fence near the Resurrección neighborhood.

Local police and state security forces responded to the scene, finding the vehicle abandoned. Authorities believe the occupants belong to a criminal group specializing in truck robberies in the area. The State Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into the incident.

Transport organizations, including the Mexican-American Transport Federation (Fematrac), have highlighted the systemic nature of these crimes. They note that cargo theft involves complex networks designed to receive, store, and redistribute stolen goods such as cement, food, spare parts, and fuel. Experts emphasize that investigations must look beyond the initial highway robbery to dismantle the infrastructure and buyers that allow stolen merchandise to re-enter the commercial market.
