Scala Coeli landfill environmental disaster legal proceedings

Legal proceedings are advancing regarding the environmental disaster caused by the Scala Coeli landfill in Calabria. During the first hearing before the Judge for Preliminary Investigations at the Tribunal of Castrovillari, Legambiente officially joined the proceedings as a civil party to represent the interests of the territory and its ecosystems.

While the municipalities of Scala Coeli and Crucoli have also moved to become civil parties, a dispute has emerged regarding the Municipality of Cariati. The local opposition group, Le Lampare, previously accused the administration of failing to follow a unanimous council mandate to join the legal action. However, the Municipality of Cariati has refuted these claims of inertia, stating that the administration has officially appointed lawyer Leonardo Celeste to represent the entity and has participated in the hearings.

Le Lampare acknowledged this clarification, noting that the municipality issued a resolution on September 1, 2026, to appoint legal counsel. The group expressed hope that the formalization of the civil party status will be completed by the next hearing scheduled for November 10, 2026.
