Caribbean AI Task Force Unveils Regional Framework for Coordinated Artificial Intelligence Development

The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) launched the Caribbean AI Task Force Final Report during the inaugural Caribbean Artificial Intelligence Forum on 23‑24 July 2026 in St Augustine. The report, prepared by a 36‑member task force over the past year, proposes a regional AI framework with seven strategic recommendations covering data and digital infrastructure, governance and ethics, economic transformation, talent development, public‑sector innovation, climate resilience and a unified Caribbean voice in global AI policy.

Pro Vice‑Chancellor Sandrea Maynard emphasized the need for coordinated action among governments, academia and the private sector, while task‑force chair Dr Craig Ramlal warned that fragmented, isolated efforts would leave the region at a disadvantage. The forum brought together ministers, diplomats, researchers, industry leaders and international partners to endorse the framework as a milestone in the Caribbean’s digital transformation, aiming to shift the region from a consumer to a rule‑maker of AI technologies.
