Winston Anderson denies CCJ misconduct allegations
Justice Winston Anderson, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), has issued a formal statement denying allegations of judicial misconduct. The controversy follows the leak of confidential internal emails in which several judges accused Anderson of governing in an “authoritarian” and “dictatorial” manner.
Anderson specifically refuted claims of “panel fixing” and attempts to influence case outcomes. He clarified that a judge's removal from a panel in the D’Almada v Trinidad and Tobago case was due to a dispute over judicial attire rather than legal views. Regarding the extradition case involving Guyanese opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed, Anderson asserted that the ruling was reached with “complete unanimity” among all seven judges.
Anderson condemned the unauthorized disclosure of court correspondence, stating it undermines judicial independence and public trust. While addressing the leadership crisis, he acknowledged that his handling of judicial dress code matters may have been perceived as too strong, but maintained his actions were intended to protect institutional consistency.
