Caribbean culture and history featured at New York Fashion Week

Caribbean culture and history were prominently featured during New York Fashion Week through two distinct showcases.

Brooklyn-based luxury fashion house Vinshēk debuted its “Cacos Collection,” designed by Garvenchy Nicolas. The line honors the legacy of Haitian resistance fighters who opposed the United States occupation of Haiti between 1915 and 1934. Inspired by the Cacos rebellion and the documentary “The Forgotten Occupation,” the clothing utilizes colors reflecting the Haitian landscape and the red-feathered bird from which the fighters took their name. Nicolas stated the collection aims to connect with the Haitian identity and the fight to protect land and dignity.

Additionally, the Caribbean Fashion Collective (CFC) presented its Spring/Summer 2027 show in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. The street-style runway featured 51 pieces across four brands: Rêve Jewellery, Kudos Designs by Gaynelder Grazette, FLUID COVENANT by Benji Vanderpump, and THELOST TRIBE. CFC founder and CEO Xavier Walker noted that the collective platform allows individual brands to maintain their identity while sharing a runway. The showcase emphasized bold colors, dramatic silhouettes, and designs reflecting the creativity of the Caribbean diaspora.
