Caribbean Examinations Council reports high student absenteeism

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has reported significant concerns regarding rising student absenteeism during the May/June examination period. Data indicates that over 30,000 students failed to attend various examinations across the region, with 32,403 candidates absent from CSEC exams alone. Additionally, 3,534 candidates were absent at the CAPE level.

Nicole Manning, CXC’s Director of Operations, noted that absenteeism prevents candidates from being graded, as missing a component disqualifies them from receiving a grade. Surveys suggest some students choose not to attend because they feel unprepared. The council is currently working with regional education officials to investigate the underlying causes and encourage higher attendance.

Educators have highlighted that socio-economic issues, such as poverty and community instability, contribute to these challenges. Some teachers have advised parents to reduce academic pressure on students, noting that the current generation faces unique motivational hurdles and that examinations like CXC and SEA provide opportunities for future re-sits.
