Caribbean flamingo conservation efforts expand in Yucatán

Conservation efforts for the Caribbean flamingo have been bolstered in Mexico's Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve through a combination of satellite technology and traditional monitoring. During the 2026 banding operation, 147 flamingo chicks were banded, a significant increase from the 70 recorded in 2025.

As part of the “Conservation of the Caribbean Flamingo in the Yucatán Peninsula” project, three adult flamingos—named Víctor, Pedro, and Elena—were equipped with solar-powered French satellite transmitters. These devices allow researchers to track real-time movements, feeding areas, and breeding sites to better understand the species' needs and identify environmental threats.

The initiative is funded by a 2.5 million peso investment from the Pedro y Elena Hernández Foundation, AXA Mexico Foundation, and SiMiPlaneta Foundation. The project is scheduled to continue until March 2027. The recent operation also involved 170 volunteers and 40 children, aiming to foster community engagement and environmental stewardship in the region.
