Caribbean immigrants remembered 25 years after September 11 attacks

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, attention is being drawn to the more than 100 Caribbean immigrants who lost their lives in the tragedy. These victims represented at least 14 different nations and territories, including Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Puerto Rico.

Many of the deceased were immigrants who had built lives in New York, working in sectors such as finance, food service, and building maintenance. Notable individuals include Karl Henry Joseph, a Haitian-born firefighter with Engine 207; Kris Romeo Bishundat, a Guyanese former youth cricketer and U.S. Navy technician who died at the Pentagon; and Nizam Hafiz, a Guyanese-born cricketer who worked for Marsh & McLennan. Also remembered is Michael Richards, a Jamaica-born artist who maintained a studio on the 92nd floor of the World Trade Center.
