Caribbean nations implement new early warning tools

The Caribbean Meteorological Organization (CMO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have launched a series of workshops across four Caribbean nations to transform regional disaster management. The initiative focuses on implementing the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) and Impact-Based Forecasting and Warning Services (IBFWS).

CAP provides a standardized format for disseminating a single authoritative warning across multiple channels, including television, radio, social media, and mobile phones. This ensures consistent and trusted information reaches the public quickly. Complementing this, IBFWS shifts the focus from predicting weather patterns to identifying the specific impacts of those patterns, such as who and what will be affected.

The workshops are scheduled throughout August 2026 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, and Jamaica. Supported by the CREWS Caribbean Project Phase 2, the effort contributes to the global ‘Early Warnings for All’ initiative, aiming to improve inter-agency coordination and reduce the impact of natural disasters.
