Caribbean region leaders propose referendum for territorial autonomy
During the commemoration of the Caribbean Region Day at the Atlántico Government headquarters, officials proposed the creation of a promoter committee for a referendum. The initiative aims to transform the Administrative and Planning Region (RAP Caribe) into a Territorial Entity (RET), granting the Colombian Caribbean greater administrative competence, independent resources, and decision-making power over strategic development projects.
Eduardo Verano de la Rosa, Governor of Atlántico, cited the autonomous model of the Basque Country in Spain as a potential reference for the region. He noted that current efforts are being channeled through Bill 162, currently in Congress, which seeks to establish a framework for regional autonomy and clear responsibilities. The proposal builds upon the historical precedent of the 2010 'Voto Caribe,' where approximately 2.5 million citizens supported regional organization models.
The event also served to honor figures dedicated to regional integration, including Elvia Mejía Fernández, recognized for her long-standing advocacy for decentralization and the fight against centralism in the Colombian state.
