Caribbean region leaders propose strategic priorities for economic growth
During the Caribbean Regional Meeting for the 2026-2030 National Development Plan in Barranquilla, regional leaders and business groups presented strategic initiatives to boost economic growth in Colombia's Caribbean region.
Governor Eduardo Verano outlined five key priorities to help reach a 6% national economic growth target: ensuring reliable and competitively priced energy, completing strategic road corridors, strengthening port and airport infrastructure, protecting against climate change, and investing in technology and human talent. Specific connectivity projects mentioned include improving roads between Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta, as well as the La Hermandad bridge project.
The Inter-guild Committee of Atlántico submitted 24 prioritized proposals to the national government. These include the development of a Multimodal Caribbean Cluster to integrate maritime and fluvial activities, ensuring the navigability of the Magdalena River, and improving land and rail connections between major cities.
Energy and environmental concerns were also central to the discussions. Business groups called for tariff justice and a stable electrical system, while emphasizing the need for urgent mitigation works to address coastal erosion, flooding, and droughts caused by climate change.
