Caribbean tourism initiatives launch sargassum processing plant and beach upgrades

In the Dominican Republic, Grupo Puntacana is evaluating a large‑scale processing plant that would turn the invasive sargassum algae washing up on Caribbean beaches into bio‑fertilizers, compost, construction materials and other high‑value products. The project is being developed together with Finnish biotech firm Origin by Ocean, and aims to turn a costly environmental problem into a source of jobs, innovation and circular‑economy growth while protecting Punta Cana’s beaches.

In Colombia’s Atlántico department, a $3.5 billion beach‑order scheme at Punta Astilleros in the municipality of Piojó is 70 % complete. The works include 700 m of wooden walkways, viewing platforms, eco‑toilets, kiosks, parking and signage, designed to preserve the coastal ecosystem while creating a sustainable tourism destination. Governor Eduardo Verano highlighted that the improvements will convert the corridor into an organized space for recreation and local economic development.
