Caribbean tourism shifts toward smaller islands and South American travelers

According to the Amadeus-CHTA 2026 Caribbean Travel Trends report, the Caribbean tourism market is undergoing a shift in visitor demographics and destination preferences. While overall regional visitor demand grew by only 1 percent year-over-year between April 2025 and March 2026, smaller islands are seeing significant growth. Dominica and Sint Maarten led this trend with visitor increases of 22 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

Latin American markets are becoming increasingly vital to the region. Demand from Latin America rose 24 percent, driven largely by a 117 percent surge in premium travel from South America. Specifically, Peru and Argentina saw premium travel bookings jump by 192 percent and 164 percent. This shift comes as traditional markets like the U.S., Canada, and Europe show plateauing growth.

Economic factors also favor the region; U.S. travelers currently pay an average of $385 for economy fares to the Caribbean, which is 32 percent less than the $569 average fare to South America. Additionally, Caribbean high-season hotel revenue per available room (RevPAR) reached $183, a 5.2 percent increase year-over-year.
