Caribou voters to decide on $2.9 million fire truck purchase
Voters in Caribou will decide in the November midterm election whether the city’s fire department can spend up to $2.9 million to replace an aging ladder truck. The Caribou City Council advanced the referendum question following the city charter requirement that all capital improvement projects exceeding $500,000 must receive public approval.
The department’s current aerial ladder truck was purchased in 2002. While still operational, Fire Chief Brian Lajoie noted that the vehicle has outlived its typical 20-year lifespan, which could affect emergency response capabilities. Lajoie emphasized that aerial capabilities are essential for protecting the city’s diverse structures, including schools, healthcare facilities, and multi-story apartment buildings.
The $2.9 million figure serves as a spending ceiling. The final cost will be determined by competitive bidding, available grants, and financing options such as municipal funds, bonds, or lease-purchases. Officials noted that it could take up to four years for the department to receive a new truck once an order is placed.
